coat question....

chakup May 19, 2004 11:18 PM

my wife and I are looking for a JRT and want a smooth coat. We found some but both parents are broken coat, I spoke with the lady who breed them who told me there really isn't a guarnty on coats with JRT's, they could end up smooth or broken. Any ideas if this is true and if so any things to look for to try to end up with a smooth coat.

It is true. Smooth coats are hard to come by and well built smooth coats even harder to come by. If you are looking for a smooth coated puppy try looking at the puppy's mouth. I've observed that most broken coated dogs start breaking at the corners of their mouths if it isn't apparent elsewhere. There is definately no guarantee on coat with a jrt. There is a greater chance of getting a certain coat when that is the predominant coat in the pedigree such as that the parents, grandparents and great grandparents all have the same coat. The risk in that is that without breeding in some rough or broken coats the coats on the resulting puppies can become thinner and less desirable with each generation. I hope this helps.
