Persistant skin problem

sultansix May 24, 2004 02:21 PM

I have a six year old Rescue male Dobe (neutered) owned for past three years.

Since Owning him he has developed an irritant patch on each upper thigh, approximately 1" diameter.
The patches are hot(compared to other parts of skin/coat) to touch. The condition worsens in the Summer.

I assumed it was a food allergy but despite trying various dry
foods -ranging from wheat,Red meat, gluten free etc. the condition remains.

He has vet confirmed arthritus in both hips & is on permanent dosage of Glucasomine/Chondroitin.

Has anyone experienced similar condition & found a cure please?

My youngest dobermanns mother suffers from bald patches and it hasd been fully investigated by the vet and the outcome is that the vet said it is due to hormones. Over secretion of certain hormones cause the hair to fall out. My advice would be to speak to a vet about the problems and ask them to investigate the cause.

Have you had a thyroid panel done on him yet? I would try to rule out a low thyroid before going any further. Good luck

Thank you both for your replies.Thyroid checked OK.Vet says this is a common problem with Dobes, probably an allergy etc etc but not specific reply.

It is my experience that many breeders of one type of dog are often more knowledgeable on their specialist dog type than Vets.

I just wondered if any Dobe breeders subscribed to this forum?

There are a ton of Doberman forums - some are good, and some sound good, but give out awful advice to unknowing Doberman owners. Be very careful who you listen to. When in doubt about a medical issue, ALWAYS check with your vet.
Some of the Doberman forums are members only for serious show breeders and exibitors - IMO they are the best for good info - but are NOT a pet type forum. Cyberdobes is excellent - but is not a pet forum - you can however get info from people who have been in this breed for longer than I have been alive (40 something). A good all around forum that is a mix of show, obedience, & pet is the Doberman Pincher Discussion Forum.

I personally go to a lot of forums - this being one of them.
