Hi everyone...

It was great receiving all of your warm welcomes. Well Taj is now 5 mos. and he is doing well. We decided on a RR because I fell in love with them years ago. My boyfriend's boss owned a Thai Ridgeback and she was gorgeous! She was that silvery grey color and so loyal to her owner. My boyfriend and I did a lot of research to make sure we were ready for a puppy and after bringing him home I think we made a perfect choice.
We won't be competing him in any shows..maybe agility competitions but we're not sure yet.
I have a questions for anyone who can help:
We noticed Taj's back right leg seemed to be twisting ( i guess that's the best way to explain it) as he walks and when he runs, it pushes out to the side. We asked the vet and she said he's too young for x-rays since he still is growing and that he may have something called panositis. Has anyone heard of this or experienced something like this before and if so, did it go away? Any advice would be great..Thanks again!

Marivi,

He is just too cute! I hope you post lots about him. We love to hear puppy stories.

I don't know anything about that condition. I hope it is easily treated.

Dogs come into our lives, and too quickly go leaving pawprints on our hearts, and we will never be quite the same again.

I wrote a friend of mine that knows a WHOLE lot about RR here is her reply. Hope this helps.

Paneosantitis is very common in Ridgebacks. Essentially it's growing pains - they are feeding a food too high in calcium and protien and the bones are not growing at the same rate as the rest of the dog. This causes a build up of strain in the bone and joints and is painful. Luckily they DO grow out of it. However, she is not too young for xrays and I would find a better vet Right NOW. Panosteitis
by Jennie Bullock

Panosteitis, also known as "wandering lameness" or "growing pains", is a spontaneously occurring lameness that usually affects large dogs. This disease usually occurs in dogs between the ages of 5 to 14 months, and affects males more often than females. In most cases the lameness occurs suddenly, without a history of trauma. Most often one or the other front leg is affected first, then without warning the symptoms will shift from leg to leg. Symptoms may appear to improve and then worsen in a nearly cyclic manner. Between spontaneous improvement and relocation "wandering" of discomfort areas, diagnosis can be difficult. X-rays may reveal that the bones have a greater density than is normally found.
In most cases, the pain subsides within one to two months, although it can "recycle" for up to one year. Panosteitis will eventually end its cycle and go away, with or without treatment. Pain relievers may be necessary to help make the dog more comfortable.

Thanks for the information. I hope he will eventually grow out of it. It doesn't seem to bother him since he's very active at the park and it seems to bother me more than Taj. : )
Thanks again!
