Hey! A dog forum that has posts!

mjibuwait May 27, 2004 09:06 AM

I was looking to see if there were any standard schnauzer lovers in the doghobbyist forums. I did want to make a comment though about the post regarding Standards as working dogs... I realize standards both here and in Europe are typically much smaller than say a giant or a mal and MOST would not make it through the various working rings. HOWEVER there are exceptional standards out there who would be suitable for such training and I'm not sure why there aren't some standard people trying their dogs. I do know many who do agility and tracking and work for police departments. I once owned a female giant and now own a male standard - the giant was smart, extremely quick but unfortunately a poor example of the breed as she was unstable in temperament. The standard weighs 50 pounds and can drag my 6'3" 230lb husband across the yard. He can also climb a tree if he can reach the lowest branch and has amazing stamina and drive. People always comment on how powerful he is and ask me what kind of dog he is. He is a little larger than a typical standard (most are less than 40 pounds). I have seen french ring exercises and I know that some standards could do it, but unfortunately the breed is becoming more and more of a lap dog....

Hello!

I think that one of the reasons that Standards aren't worked in SchH is because of their size. Another is, as you said, they are no longer being bred primarily for work but for companionship. The dog needs to have enough drive and the correct temperament to do a protection sport.

It sounds like you have quite a tenacious little dog there. Have you considered working him in a protection sport?

A Dog Owner's Prayer

Oh Lord, don't let me once forget how I love my trusty pet.
Help me learn to disregard canine craters in my yard.
Show me how to be a buddy even when my sofa's muddy.
Don't allow my pooch to munch postal carriers for lunch.
Shield my neighbor's cat from view--guide my steps around the doo.
Train me not to curse and scowl when it's puppy's night to howl.
Grant I shan't awake in fear with a cold nose in my ear.
Give me patience without end--help me be my dog's "best friend".
