1 yr old beagle still misbehaving

shilahs_mom Jun 23, 2004 09:37 PM

Our one year old beagle girl continues to destroy the carpet, the linens, and my clothes. She leaves my husband's things alone though. She also bites the kids and I pretty hard when she wants to play and doesn't like to calm down when corrected. We take her for bike rides or walks almost every day but we both work so she is alone for 8-9 hours each weekday. Is she acting out because she is lonely and needs another dog for a companion or will she out grow this soon? And how can I get her to stop biting us when she wants to play? She doesn't like to play fetch -- she only likes to wrestle and she ends up biting too hard. I am sure we are doing something wrong when correcting her so some advice would be really appreciated. Thanks!

The dog can't rough-house if no one will do it with her. Refuse to play that game. Turn your back, walk away, or otherwise passicvely resist.

No, she's not acting out from being left alone. She's too young to be loose in the house unattended, so you need to use some sort of confinement. 8 hrs is the maximum to leave a dog without a potty break, so you need to arrange something for her. Maybe someone could come home at noon.

As far as the biting and how to do corrections, sounds like you haven't done training classes with her. Better do that!
