Help for Changing Legislation in Boston!

missmagetta Jul 07, 2004 04:51 PM

Hello, I am new to this site. I am trying to see what ideas are out there for altering breed legislation. Boston is trying to impose laws that just won't work. The responsible owners are the only ones who will be following these rules, and it is not their dogs who are causing problems! What do people think makes successful breed laws? How do you get the Law makers to listen? Something needs to be done, if this law fails to "protect" people the next step will be a breed ban. HELP!

Hi Welcome to the PetHobbyist! I post on the Shiba Inu board. We are going through something similar here in NY where the lawmakers want to force dog owners to carry insurance against dog bites and is dicriminating against certain breeds. The problem I have with that is if I get mugged in NYC what insurance to they force the mugger to carry in case I get injured. The only way to make them listen is to barrage them with emails, letter, or petitions. Even then you might have to find one sypmathetic to your plight. It's not any easy thing to do but it is doable.

You're right- a breed ban will be next. It has already happened in some RI towns. I couldn't agree more - it is absolutely wrong! But the irresponsible owners are apparently the majority and are really screwing it up for the responsible ones. I don't know how that is gonna change! Stupid is everywhere! I might suggest, though that you contact the MSPCA. (they are now on Center St., JP w/ the Angell Memorial) They have a dept. that is specifically for animal legislation and (as a former employee but constant supporter) there have already been some hearing on this subject- or at least about insurance for homeowners that have certain breeds. They have a newsletter that is sent out via email plus you can keep in touch with the dept. head (sorry- cannot remember her name). You can also do the same with the ASPCA which is based in NYC but is also available for everyone across the country. This is one of my pet peeves as a homeowner and owner of a breed that is usually discriminated against - cuz you are absolutely right - it is the idiots out there that want a "tough dog" that are causing most of the problems!!! Well, before I get on a rant.....I hope this helps you out a little!
