Herding children....

trainertom Jul 11, 2004 03:59 PM

This is just a cute side note. My girlfriend and I went to the park yesterday, and we had with us, her 2 daughters and my BC. What a mix! She discovered, first hand, the breeds ability and passion to heard anything from wal-mart bags floating around, to ducks, to children. NOW she wants a BC to help keep her 6 and 10 year old daughters in line! TOOOOOoooo funny! I've seen plenty of parents scoop their children up when this happens, and here we are encouraging the children to "do what the dog wants". Don't get me wrong, this was a good thing. He was bringing them back when they attempted to stray too far from us in favor of the ducks. Then HE discovered the ducks and I had a pooped pup on my hands. Thank God for small favors!

I do not have children- not do I have a BC that herds everything! (been there - tried that!LOL) But hearing people talk about this propensity for hnerding children I have often thought of the many benefits of such behavior. I wish Atticus DID herd kids.... there are a few in the neighborhood that.......oh never mind. It was a wicked thought! Had something to do with the bay at the end of our street.

Hello
I own 8 Border Collies and I would never let my dogs herd my kids. My dogs are bred to herd sheep and some are more of the cattle type and I do not encourage my dogs to ever herd kids. Coming from a dog trainer(I am assuming that because of the name) I can not believe you would think it is funny. Maybe you can control it but what about a person who is not a trainer and reads your post? What do you think will happen when the kids do not do what the BC wants them to do? BC's are bred to nip or the cow bred one grip livestock. How horrible would it be if a persons dog bit a child after the childs parents encouraged the dog to do "herd the kids"
One of the first things I tell people NOT to do when they get a BC pup is Do Not Allow your dog to herd your kids. It may seem cute at first, but it can be a real pain in the butt when your BC's real herding drive kicks in and he wants to herd your kids for real. Ask any herding trainer.
