GUARD DOG TRAINING QUESTION

giodane Jul 11, 2004 11:20 PM

Hi, I am about to purchase a doberman older puppy and from what I hear from a lot of my friends who have dobermans, they said their dogs went through guard dog trainig very successfully and they're still a very good family dog. What all goes on in this training...where can I find info on it? and how do you all feel about it as I know dobes are naturally protective of their family and property.
Thanks!

Dobermans should always be minimuly taken through basic obedience with their owner(s), but I pretty much think that any Doberman with good temperment is going to be all the "guard" dog you will ever need. I think that most law enforcement people would tell you that any dog that will bark when strangers approach your home will deter any but the most determined of criminals. The dangers of having an "attack" trained dog in your home FAR outweigh the benifits IMO. On the other hand, a well trained & socialized Doberman is a joy to live with and will be a good watch dog naturally.
