Hi guys i have a question about beagles and their ability to track. I now that they were bread to track rabbits,and i've seen web sites were they show you how to train your dog to do this, my question is can you train your do to track any thing else like humans or any time of animal, or is it just rabbits.Sorry for the question but i'm just curious, i dont a beagle yet because i have too many questions to ask first.

I know of some Show Beagles that have also become certified thru AKC for tracking scent..."TD" after the dogs name. They do objects and people tracking I believe.

There is also the Beagle Brigade that is done in airports where the dogs sniff for contraband food items...a form of tracking scent other than animal.

I think they're noses are good enough that you can try it out and probably have sucess. The trick would be to find a hound willing to work for you, something like an obedience prospect type...one willing to work for food or toys as rewards.

My dad used to play "hide and seek" with his beagle, so I think they can most certainly track humans. In fact, I'm sure they follow any scent if it smelled interesting to them. Our puppy is good at finding stinky things, and she likes to eat ants and dead worms. Yuck.
