Is this mixed breed part pit bull?

alizrdluvr Jul 24, 2004 01:07 AM

I recently found a stray dog at a river where I was fishing. She looked really starved so I gave her almost all my lunch (I couldn't help but give it to her. After that she followed me everywhere, even across the river to the other bank where I was planning to fish. Then we floated downstream back to my stuff. She floated on top of me because she was a little afraid. It was really cute and I immediately fell for her. I took her home when I left that night. The very next day, I had a friend over. He said (and I quote)- "That dog's ate up with pit."
I think he used to have a pit bull. I never gave a second thought to the fact that she looked like one when I found her because she was so sweet and I still don't now. But what do ya'll think? Pit or no?

BTW- I hope this pic works, I've never posted a picture before.

Sorry the pics are kinda bad but I can't get her to sit still long enough to get a good one! She looks funny in this one. She always seems to mover her eyes around to look at things and not mover her head at all. So she can give you some pretty odd looks. Some of the look downright evil! lol

This is just to show her body shape because you can't see her head: it's rather busy with a rawhide bone.

Boy, I don't know. She sure is cute! Just because she "might" be a pit mix doesn't mean she is a bad dog choice for you. If she is what you want in a dog, I wouldn't worry about it. Just be aware if she has terrier in her, she may be dog aggressive and you'll need to keep that in mind when you take her out in public and around other dogs.

Personally, I saw enjoy the sweet girl.

Come back and tell us more about her!

Oh no- the fact that she might be part pit bull didn't worry me; actaully I thought it was rather neat. I have always had the feeling that the media have always been a bit unfair to pits even though I never owned one.

She's been a great dog so far. When I first brought her home, I stayed up like half the night picking off every single tick on her, from big ears to toes. They were embedded in her and made her bleed a lot, but she never showed aggression towards me once. I had to put some antibiotic cream on her pads, because they had sores from walking on sand so much. And one of her eyes had mucous(sp?) of some sort all over it, but that cleared up right away with some tear drops. Then, after a bath and a good washing up, I could finally see what color she was!

She has shown a bit of dog aggression. I brought her to my dad's house because we were going fishing for a few days. She made herself right at home on the couch and when my dad's doberman walked into the room she made an odd whine/bark/growl type noise as a warning. She'll whine a bit if Sady (the doberman) gets to close to "her" couch but since Sady's huge it doesn't get any more serious than that. She plays like crazy with my dad's husky pup, who's about her size. They're a match for each other and are almost inseperable when they're together.

I took her fishing a few times to see how she was as a fishin pardner. She was great. She'd wonder off on her own for a bit, but always come back after exploring. She never got lost (she was a stray for so long so that's not surprising). I even took her back to the river where we found her and she stayed with me as always. She'll swim, walk with me through the woods, and I can trust her to leave me and wonder off without getting herself lost.

If ever I had any doubts about the breed before, I surely don't now! She really is a great dog.

Wow, what a dog! The slight agression shown to the dobe may go away with time and more interaction. Just don't push it.

If there were that many ticks, I'd be tempted to have her checked for tick bourne problems. The vet can do a simple blood test I think for this. I'd do it just to be on the safe side. A thorough checkup with a blood profile wouldn't hurt anyway. Then you will have something to base future blood tests on.

These places where you go and she is loose, are they pretty secluded? I'd be worried about cars, even though it sounds like with her past she is pretty savy about things like this. I'm just a big worry wart about a dog being loose and injuries happening or even other dogs approaching.

Sound to me like you have a winner here for a dog. I think you'll have lots of years of pleasure with her. Congrats and thank you for taking her in and giving her a greyt home.

gosh, her face looks very similar to my mongrel (from the pix anyway). Same type of markings except my boys more orangey. He has the pit ears, not erect. She's very cute, and it's a bit hard to tell from the picture. But I agree, don't judge the breed judge the dog itself. Just be sure to start obedience training right away and be strict, but not harsh. You do not know exactly what breed she is and she may very well be a pitbull mix or another dominant type of breed. These dogs, as I'm sure you know, can be absolutely wonderful, but if not shown who's boss in a sensitive manner they can and usually will take advantage. Good luck with your new beauty!
