How to sex an URO?

Flavia Guimaraes Oct 09, 2003 09:59 AM

My uro is doing great, eating greens and veggies like crazy, chasing my fingernails probably thinking they are huge red crickets, and hiding inside his hiding tunnel.I ve already de-wormed him and he seems very heathy. The only problem is that i have to soak him in warm water to make him poop! How often does an URO poop/pee?Im soaking him in the bath tub 3 times a week and that's when he poops! As his cage is not very big and doesnt have a substrate its easy to see he is not pooping inside his cage!
Another thing: My uro is VERY tame, i bought him like that, i think he is CB.Impossible to be WC because he is too tame! At the same petshop they have some others uros as tame as him.The petshop's owner brought them together!Perhaps they are my uro's brothers and sisters i dont know! Well, id like to buy my uro a female but how can i identify a female uro from a male? Thanks!

Colouration is one clue but it's not 100% because sometimes females will take on the colouration of a male. You'll have to look at his underside, between his hind legs. There should be some pores (a line of little dots starting from the vent and going towards both legs). These pores are usually larger on males than females. Also, look for hemipenal bulges just before the vent. Malis are probably one of the most difficult uros to sex, so don't get discouraged if you can't tell right away. You should also look for signs of male or female behaviour. A male will headbob and do "circle dances" to mark his territory and they are usually more confident than females. Females will sometimes flip over on their backs and are usually more skiddish. I recommend talking to Magnum about male and female uro behaviour. He helped me figure out that Ra is male.

Hope this helps

Doug Dix told me that pore size means nothing in Saharans, but I don't know about Malis.
