People REALLY chap my hide...

trainertom Aug 02, 2004 11:52 AM

I woke this morning to the sound of my neighbor shouting my name from over the fence. I stepped out to see what the commotion was, only to be told that my 2 GSDs had gotten loose. I ran into the house, and there they were, sound asleep in the living room. What they had found were 2 gorgeous females that appear to be the same age, and judging by ear set, head, and body structure, would appear to be litter-mates.

Well, I am now 2 GSDs (yeah for me), and thouroughly annoyed. No microchips, no tattoos, and both have VERY recently worn collars. They are healthy, have NO fleas (in this area they HAVE to be on preventative or they would be swarming with them), and were apparently quite well cared for. SO, one of two things has happened: 1) The owners decided for whatever reason that they can no longer take care of 2 large working dogs or 2) The dogs were stolen and then given up on.

Now, whatever the case may be, it makes me quite leary of posting signs. If they were indeed abandoned by previous owners, I will surely not turn them back over. (German Shepherd? What does one look like? LOL) If they were stolen, these people need to be lined up in front of a firing squad. No cigarette, and ALL the guns are loaded.

Sorry for the bitching folks, it just pi§§e§ me off every time that I have to deal with something like this. On the other hand, if you know of someone in the southeast Texas area that would be interested in a gorgeous black and tan female, just let me know!!

Man...that really is a tough situation. I wouldn't want to put up posters or anything either, but I would probably check the lost and found ads in the paper and call some local vets to see if someone has reported their dogs lost. A friend of mine had two female Huskies that would escape just about everything they tried. They finally had to put that invisible fence system inside their fence or they would take turns digging and dig out....she left the camcorder on and caught them on tape while at work one day. She would have been heartbroken if someone would have kept them, but like I told her, there's no excuse for it!!! I don't care if you have to take a week off from work, you do something to keep them from getting out. If someone keeps them or they get hurt, then your responsible for them and it will be your fault. I'd love to take one of your new girls myself, but have got my hands full with my two babies now. I do live in southeast texas and if I hear of someone that would provide a good home, I'll definitly let you know.....Good luck!!!!!

By the way, where about are you in southeast texas....I'm right outside of Beaumont.

If these 2 girls had collars on, at the VERY least I wouldn't feel so bad. It's apparent that, sometime in the recent past they have worn them as their hair is still in dissaray around thier necks. I've also been to the vet to check for microchips, none. And, if they dug out, they sure cleaned their nails REALLY well. They're now sleeping on my bed, and appear to LOVE it. I also have my hands full, or I would keep them myself! :-S

BTW, I'm in Houston, so not to far at all. Howdy neighbor!

-Yeah, people...they sure make dogs look good though, don't they?
You should feel good that those pets found their way into your care: they could have done a whole lot worse!

pat yourself on the back for me, O.K.?
Good work, man!

Lucky for them, they found someone that is more than willing to share their home, heart, and bed with them, even if only for now. I hate to think about what could have happened to them if your neighbor hadn't thought they were yours.

speaking of microchips.....I was thinking of either tatooing my pups or microchiping them. Which do you suggest?

Thanks,
Katrina

Personally I do both, I tattoo AND microchip. The microchip is only good if someone actually has a reason to scan for it. The tattoo, is a visual deterent against theft, and a visible identifier that they are indeed your dogs. They are actually working on a chip that works like the lo-jac system for cars so that you can call and have your dogs location identified. GO TECHNOLOGY! I will have all of mine done again when this technology becomes available!

oh tom... keep them!! What's two more dogs? I mean... I thought you always wanted a pack of dogs running through the house!!

How old do they appear to be? Do they look like they are from German or American lines? I'd call the local shelters and see if anyone reported a lost dog. Call your local GSD club and tell them about the pair. I'm sure they will be more than happy to help you find a new home for them in the event that their owners are not found.

A Dog Owner's Prayer

Oh Lord, don't let me once forget how I love my trusty pet.
Help me learn to disregard canine craters in my yard.
Show me how to be a buddy even when my sofa's muddy.
Don't allow my pooch to munch postal carriers for lunch.
Shield my neighbor's cat from view--guide my steps around the doo.
Train me not to curse and scowl when it's puppy's night to howl.
Grant I shan't awake in fear with a cold nose in my ear.
Give me patience without end--help me be my dog's "best friend".

Unfortunately they didn't come with papers, and if I am still to acquire a working bitch, they don't exactly fit into a breeding program. They are very definitely American lines. Sloped backs, elongated muzzles, clueless look....j/k. They are 2 of the SWEETEST girls that you could ever hope to meet. I haven't needed the showers that I've taken over the past couple of days. They are more than willing to keep me clean, or at the very least, keep me THEIR version of clean.

Oh, and I have contacted EVERYONE GSD rescue of Houston, no less than a dozen rescues (both city and privately funded) and the GSD club of Houston. To date, nobody has reported these girls missing. JERKS. Probably took their collars off, drove them far from from home and said "be free". Firing squad time.
