Docile Milk Snakes???

dasnakeguy Oct 09, 2003 10:14 AM

I've currently have a Pueblan Milk Snake and previously had a Mexican Milk Snake but both have been very shy, skittish, and jumpy, and sometimes nippy. The pueblan and mexican are the only ones I have experienced and both had the same personality. I want to know if there's any docile milk snakes out there? I really like the coloration of the milk snakes but i would like to find a one with a docile temprament. Does anyone know the tempraments of hondurans, sinaloans, jaliscos, nelsons, etc.

I have hondurans, nelsons, coastal plains, and black milks. Black milks are definitely the most docile. They also don't need supplemental heat so you can keep them at room temp. The coastal plains milks are very docile too, but they are harder to find and neonates are a pain to get feeding. My nelsons are very calm, but they can be skittish as hatchlings but calm with age.
Hope this helps.

Agreed, black seem the most docile but then they aren't the typical milk snake in the tri color sense of it. Also agree with the calm nature of coastal but as for getting them started I'd have to say they are much easier than many species out there alterna, zonota, pyro and even some getula. Since learning that all they take is a little patience and time I've yet to loose a single coastal neonate to not being able to get it on feed. I currently have my whole crop of hypo and het coastals. Most are already on pinks and the rest are just about ready to take their first. The sorry part is that my production this year, from both females, ALL hatched out male!!! Now what were the odds of that.

Hello,
If you're looking for color and temperament, I'd reccommend a sinaloan. I have an adult female that is very calm and easy to handle. They also have the widest red bands of all milksnake subspecies, and are fairly inexpensive. You might want to look at Andeans as well. Good luck!

How about a regular old nominate eastern milk from these US of A? They don't glow in the dark but they are beautiful and I've never even heard of one musking, let alone biting.

Is your Mexican milk a baby? I always found that Mexican milks as adults were among the calmest milks around, except maybe for the larger Andean and Black milks. Pueblans stay kind of crazy. All milks are somewhat crazy as babies.
