New to the Forum and New Site

Stormkloud Aug 21, 2004 09:37 PM

Hello, I am new to this forum (great hobbyist site by the way) and wanted to list my new site. I am redesigning it and it will be finished by the 24th of August. Its called "In The Company of Wolves" and the URL is http://wolfhybrid.us

If anyone here is interested in wolfhybrid education, care, behavior, resources that are factual and not full of fluff you may enjoy my site.

Ive been involved with wolfhybrids for approx 10 years and want to continue to see them around for the rest of my life. We all must take personal responsibility if we keep them, and I hope to educate anyone who takes the time to view my site about how to avoid bad breeders, puppymills. How to correctly identify a wolfhybrid of varying content. Approx 75 % of the wolfhybrids and wolves people think they have in this country are either low content or dogs.

Misrepresentation is rampant in this country and it is very important for the welfare of the wolfhybrid that you know its correct content.

I happend upon this list and site by accident and am glad I found it. I don't belong to lists generally and my site is my tool to educate.

Take care

I thought the term hybrid wasn't accepted any more. Isn't a hybrid a cross between species and the wolf and the dog are the same species or something like that.

Hybrid is used by animal control, veternarians, sanctuaries and the media. That is my target audience. If it makes them feel more comfortable to use the word wolfhybrid, they will pay more attention to the website. And I plan on using the name until people start talking about the dog in the backgroud of their wolfdogs. I wonder why no one calls them dogwolves?

No one cares about the doggie side, only the wolf side. So I would prefer not to use the word "dog" until they start caring.

From Merriam Websters Dictionary
Main Entry:hybrid
Pronunciation:*hy-brid
Function:noun
Etymology:Latin hybrida
Date:1601

1 : an offspring of two animals or plants of different races, breeds, varieties, species, or genera
2 : a person whose background is a blend of two diverse cultures or traditions

#1 is correct. If you mix a wolf and a dog (which IS a different breed, ie shepherd, poodle, malamute. There are over 150 recognized "breeds" according to the AKC.
Variety would also apply. How many varieties of dog are there? Over 300 worldwide.
Dogs and wolves are not of the same "breed". Same genetic material, but not completely same behaviors.

So actually the Vets, media, AC and many Sanctuaries, and dog groups have been correct all along Glad I stuck with it.
