Our 14 month old Doberman

garfield Aug 24, 2004 07:56 AM

Hi everyone, i'm new to this board and i'm coming here because of skin problems my newly adopted female doberman has developed.

We just adopted her last saturday and she's started getting uncolored bumps which sometimes get irritated and bleed. Those bumps are dense around her chest and back between the shoulder blades and sparse on the top of the head and under her head (not around the chin) I'm pretty sure it's not Acne.

We've switched her diet to a dog food i just found out was corn filled (corn gluten ?) so i'll be switching her to something non-corn filled.

Do you think that might have triggered an allergic reaction ?.

I'm not sure about the bumps being present when we picked her up, she had several scabs from where she rough-played with some other dogs where she was adopted from.

She's been bathed once since we got her. With MagicCoat Hypo Allergenic shampoo.

I've read that it could be follicular dysplasia. So I'm not sure, i'd like to take her to the Vet but i'm afraid of getting the run around and that i'll have an inexperienced vet not be able to diagnose the problem correctly.

If anyone is in the San Antonio, TX area could refer me to a good vet, i'd greatly appreciate it.

Anyways thank you for yout time, i hope that you can provide some insight as to what's going on with our dog.

Chris

A veterinary dermatology specialist handles skin diseases. There's probably one in your area.

Hi Garfield! Welcome to the DogHobbyist forums. I post on the Shiba Inu forum but frequent the other boards as well. I'm not to sure I know the problem with your pup. It could very well be a food allergy. You might try switching back to the pups original food or try a food such as Wellness. Since your asking for a vet in your area I'm guessing you must be new to San Antonio? Until you can get a referal for a vet I would suggest you take your pup to one anyway, or as Kathy has suggested, to a dermatology specialist. Good Luck and please post back any results.

I'd get her thyroid checked-hypothyroidism is very common in dobermans, it can cause a variety of skin and coat problems.
