HELP - Progressive Skin Condition with our Yorkie & other questions

bigcagereptiles Aug 29, 2004 02:44 PM

Hi,
My family and I adopted GiGi a Yorkshire Terrier a few months back.
Before adoption we babysat her often over the last year and got to know her very very well.
She will be 10 years old in January. She just had a veterinarian give her a check up before she was given to us and got a clean bill of health. By the way we adopted her from a friend and saw the receipt from the vet etc and all looked fine at the time. But, I will be taking he to the vet again as lately I noticed that she has been scratching a lot. I gave her a couple flea baths and have yet to see any fleas – before or after the baths. On closer inspection I noticed on her muzzle, under her and chin and on parts of her body she has scattered flaky dry skin with scabbed over what look like old fleabites but are the size of a human mosquito bites. They look painful and has her uncomfortable. I had an old Irish Setter when he got past 9 years of age had this same condition of the skin where it gets irritated red, itchy, dry and with small scabbed over scars. In my Irish Setters case, it was fleas and we tended to it and was able to get it under control. Can my Yorkie have an internal reaction to something that causes this skin condition/ailment or can it be fleas that have since come and gone. It seems progressive which is why we are going to the vet, but I wanted to ask if anyone has seen this before and if there is anything over the counter that I can use today “SUNDAY” to relieve this skin condition she has? Are there brands of flea collars etc that can help if this did stem from flea bites? Other than that she is active. It would be good to have some good advice on this before I take her to a vet.
Since it looks progressive, part of me is wondering if the vet will tell me it is a condition that is being manifested from an internal conditions.

What is the best brand name dog food for a 10 year old Female Yorkie? (never had pups)
Also are there some good Yorkshire websites online that may deal with health issues? What are some top books on this breed –I know there are a lot of books on the subject but I like to find the best ones.
Thank you so much, Concerned Yorkie Owner… Steve

The vet needs to see the condition before you consider any home remedies. The vet can advise you on food, too. If the dog was doing well before adoption, I'd consider giving her the food she was getting then.
