Chipped Tooth

jeffharding Sep 08, 2004 09:03 AM

I was playing with my AmStaff the other day when i noticed his top incisor(big pointy tooth) was about broken in half. it was probably from a bone or something. is it necessary to take him to the vet, can they do anything about it? it looked kinda brown. I have antibiotics i was giving him for his elbow bruise, should i give them to him for that just in case? it doesnt seem to bother him, he still chews on bones and eats well.

It should be checked by a vet. Don't give him antibiotics other than other a vet's directions.

with our GSD. The tooth can be pulled, or it can have dental work, or you can practice "benign neglect" -- those are the three choices that were given to us. We were given pain meds to dull the ache (he was noticeably bothered by it), and told to watch for infected, but our choice was to leave it be and let the tooth die. As it dies, it does discolor, and at that point, the dog should feel no pain. He seems fine now, and the tooth hasn't discolored.

I wouldn't give abx without first a vet check. If the tooth is in bad shape, the vet should see it and determine if further action is needed, or if the tooth is just dead. If it is infected, the tooth probably will need to be pulled. Infected teeth (or habitual infected teeth), can cause damage to the heart, and you have to be careful.

Abx for a bruise?

I would take him to the vet just to make sure that it isn't causing any problems. If it isn't most likely the vet won't do anything until it does. Don't give him any anti-biotics until your vet tells you to do so. One thing is thou, you shouldn't give him so many hard meaty bones or you will end up having all the teeth filed down or broken. I'm not sure what type of bone you are giving your dog..but I give my dog non-weight bearing bones.
