Doxie w/ disk injury?

doxiegirl75 Sep 28, 2004 01:30 PM

Hi,

I'm new here. I'm posting because my mini-doxie last night started to walk w/ her tail between her legs; she walks fine and is eating, going to the bathroom although when she went #2 her tail was still curved downward and not staight out. I've picked her up and she makes no sounds of being in pain but does seem to want to be alone and away from other two larger dogs.
My two larger dogs pay no attention to where they walk and may have hurt her or she may have jumped off of the chair and hurt her back.
My question is do you think this is something that will self-corrct in a few days or should I have her looked at.
I've read that stage I disk injuries will self-correct but I haven't found any signs or symptoms to be sure that is the problem.

The vets today have become so expensive that I hate to bring her there if this will self heal.
Thanks in advance.

She needs to be seen by a vet. Until the vet releases her to move around normally (which may not be anytime soon), keep her on restricted activity. This means either in a crate or on a leash at all times, and absolutely no running or jumping. It could save your dog from paralysis, so be strict about it. And do get her to a vet, pronto.

Thanks! I was thinking that since she made no sounds of being in pain and was doing everything fine that it may not be serious. I'll make an appt. for her now.

Dogs have a survival instinct to hide their pain. They often give only very slight signs that there is something wrong, even when it's extremely serious. Showing pain in the wild would get an animal killed, and instinct is a strong force in dog behavior.

That makes complete sense to me; she is among a pack having 2 other dogs. She may be small but she is one tough little dog.

I called the Vet and he suggested that it could be an infection in her anal gland. We have a appt. for Fri. but, she does appear to be straightening out her tail when she walks and goes to the bathroom. SO I'm feeling a sigh of relief.

Thank you

Anal infections are also a problem and let's hope it is that as the vet will squeeze the anal glands and expel any muck that is in them and probably give you a course of anti-biotics. Usually when they damage a disc they are in pain. I have owned, bred and exhibited dachshunds since 1960 so have seen either personally or with others most problems that dachies can get. If you or any other person reading this post are interested in getting info about disc problems, please email me at privatemail@valdachs.com, I will email it to you.
