I'd suggest working in one first, more than one if you can. The boarding part of a dog training business or veterinary hospital could be great experience, too. It would be worth doing it on a volunteer basis for the experience.

you didn't give us much to go on. but getting some first hand experience is the best way to go. there are lots of logistics to consider like zoning & incorporation, liscensing, insurance. you can do a google search on kennel building & get some ideas on structures. Climate in your area dictates what to consider & the breed as in some larger dogs will need much sturdier type kennels. There is the noise factor if you have neighbors. The state agriculture does inspections & they require proof of cleanliness/light/heat/ air cond. safety. You'll need a variety of forms/contracts. Check out some of the message boards to learn as much as you can
I'm just trying to do 'rescue' on a very small scale & its overwhelming the details to consider. Whatever you do in the dog business, hope you will find a place for a rescue or 2, as you go.
