Cane Corso?

Deerhounds Oct 07, 2004 12:55 PM

I was curious. A friend of mine in another state has a Cane Corso, who I have never met. From her description the dog sounds absolutely wonderful as a guardian who is not as aggressive as some of the other protective breeds, and with what seems to be a wonderful temperament. Is this is a fair impression of the breed? I've read up on them on the web, and it seems to be the image that breeders are presenting, but I wasn't sure how accurate it is.

Also, I have seen many photos of cane corsos with natural ears, which I prefer - probably from Europe? Is it possible to get this breed in the US with natural ears? How about tails? I also don't like docked tails (I am not saying that I want to make them illegal... just that they are not my preference). Is it unheard of for US breeders to leave the tails undocked?

Thanks for any thoughts you have!

I know someone with a CC that has natural ears. The dogs' tail is docked because the tail was done before she got the dog (obviously). I'm sure that you can request to a breeder to have a natural tail before the pups are born, as they are done at approx. 3 days old.

I get the impression that they are great dogs too... They have a very powerful and magestic appearance... that is when they're not acting like dorks

If you would like to find out some more about the CC's then please feel free to email me and I will direct you to a few places where you can talk to CC people.

A Dog Owner's Prayer

Oh Lord, don't let me once forget how I love my trusty pet.
Help me learn to disregard canine craters in my yard.
Show me how to be a buddy even when my sofa's muddy.
Don't allow my pooch to munch postal carriers for lunch.
Shield my neighbor's cat from view--guide my steps around the doo.
Train me not to curse and scowl when it's puppy's night to howl.
Grant I shan't awake in fear with a cold nose in my ear.
Give me patience without end--help me be my dog's "best friend".

Christy,
I have seen and met quite a few at the rare breed shows, but they all have their ears & tails done. Personally I would say they are like rotties or so many other working/quarding breeds in that a properly bred temperament is a wonderful dog. The ones I have met have all been very nice- some are aloof at first but not agressive. There is one breeder that I have set up with many times at shows and his male is the nicest friendly boy. About the same age as Quest and he and Quest are able to never have a problem with their crates side by side. They are like many of the working breeds in that they can be same sex dog aggressive, but they can learn to have manners no matter what.

Thanks, Lesya and Val!

I am going to keep my eye out for any rare breed shows where I might meet one. It will be a few years before I can bring another dog into my home, but when I do, I want a dog with some instinct toward protectiveness. So I'm investigating a number of breeds. I may well end up with what I had before - a mixed breed shelter dog - but since I have time, I'm doing my homework! And getting to meet many wonderful new dogs in the process. <G>

I had thought and hoped that I'd be able to do this sooner, but when I got back my co-owned dog Rebel recently, I had to scrap that plan. Fortunately Rebel is actually a bit more protective than deerhounds normally are. He is extremely friendly to people, but he will sometimes bark when someone comes onto the property and he has an alertness that suggests to me that he would probably protect me if something was really wrong. It's hard to explain, but having lived with a seriously protective dog and known a lot of actual trained protection dogs, it's a quality that I have come to recognize. Most deerhounds just don't have it, and friendly as he is, Rebel seems to.

I haven't seen any natural ones, but I have only seen a few.
I bet with natural ears they lokk sooo cute!
I have a question to anyone who knows this breed.
I know of a 4 moth old pup who growls and bites.Very aggressive.I know its alot of how it is being raised, and where it came from, is this breed naturally aggressive?
This pup goes after kids if they walk by.It growls at everyon then lunges. It has bitten people twice, once drew blood. The owner says "oh bad boy" thats it!
This can't be normal is it?
