Dobies hate kennels???

Bashawi Oct 07, 2004 10:10 PM

The guy who owns the kennel where I take my Doberman told me today that as a breed, Dobies tend not to do well in the kennel environment. Has anyone heard that? He said my dog was acting spooked and uncertain, and snarled at him in a most convincing way. He's never shown any aggression before! We got him as a rescue, so we don't know his history, but I've done a lot of research on Dobermans and never heard that they don't like kennels. Opinions?

Our dobie shadow is a rescue from the kennel too, and he never had any aggression issues (well, except for cats, but that's a different story ). People at the kennel loved him, for his good nature and for the fact that he would cope with any given dog in the same box, without problems. We still take him to that kennel when we go for hollidays, and everybody there is happy to see him again. They say he is a little depressed in the first day, but after that he's ok, getting lots of exercise and play.

So no, I never heard dobermen have problems with kennels, more than other dogs. Maybe you should try a different kennel!

Dobermans aren't a breed that tends to thrive when forced to live in a kennel environment full time. There's a big difference between living in a kennel with minimal human interaction and a short stay while owners are out of town.

Well, we need a tie breaker! I don't think I'll use a kennel again unless I have to. I'm trying to find a responsible house/dog sitter, but it's hard. But I really wonder about the kennel owner's assertation that Dobies don't like kennels!

My dobe stands the kennel just like any of my other dogs. It definately isn't his favorite place to be but he acts just fine there. I would find a new kennel before you try again because if the guy claimed yours growled he is already going to be uneasy about him. I would think any dog would be slightly spooked and uncertain in a kennel anyway. You may be able to find a place where you can see the dog and how the people there interact with him. Hope you find something that works for you!
