rottie as second dog...

juice Oct 14, 2004 02:45 AM

i'm lookin at a rottie as a second dog and i have a question regarding what to do when not home. I have a male sheperd mix who gets along with most dogs. Is submissive when challenged but dominant if he can get away with it. My question is this...when not home do i need to seperate my dog from the rottie? i'd prefer to not have to do this, and be able to let them play together in the yard and what not without me constantly supervising i.e I have to run into the shower before i leave the house and i have to let the dogs out to do their thing or have to deal with someone comin to the house for a short visit who is not comfortable around dogs and i have to put the dogs out in the fenced yard while that person is there. This is all ofcourse after seeing for a while that thee dogs do get along relatively well. I don't feel that my dog would/could hurt the rott but the concern is what the rott could do to my sheperd. Thanks for any and all input.

also for some reason my dog seems to get along better with other fixed males rather than females. Is this normal or just some kind of coincidence? Does this ever happen since i always hear that males get along better with females? Would i be better off goin with a male rather than a female as i had planned?

For every rule there is an exception. Generally, it works better to get the second dog of the opposite sex, but that is absolutely not carved in stone. Two males often get along just fine. Unless the dog is a show dog or breeding stock, then it should be spayed or neutered. Crates are always a good idea to ensure safety when you are not there. Gates are another idea. Muzzles are another idea. Has the rottie been around other dogs? How old is the rottie? Has the rottie ever had dog aggression issues? The more you know about the second dog's background, the more informed your decision will be. Is it possible to have a trial period with the two dogs? It may be that the dogs get along just fine. You could try introducing the two dogs on neutral ground away from your home and see how they get along. Maybe try taking both for a walk. Just a few ideas. Good luck.
