Does anyone use Ivermectin as a monthly heartworm preventative?
If so, what dose do you give your GSD? I have read several boards and it seems that no one can agree on the doseage.

I hope you decide against doing this. It's very easy to accidentally overdose your dog. It's much safer to use Heartguard or Interceptor that is the right dosage for the dog.

Ivermectin is prescribed according to weight. Interceptor does not contain Ivermectin. Just a few days ago I had a lengthy conversation with my vet about Ivermectin as I have a dog that is sensitive to it (a genetic problem). Such products as Heartguard are dosed according to a dog's weight and therefore easy to figure out- either under 50 lbs. or 50 - 100 lbs. It is a matter of micrograms so is virtually impossible to figure if you happen to be using the Ivermectin used for horses, for instance. It is well worht the extra few dollars to get the stuff that is already dosed for dogs than to try and figure it out yourself- plus it most certainly could be dangerous for your dog whether it is to much or too little.

I always thought that the ivermectin was a pretty standard dose, but that it's the interceptor that people dose differently. For example, I use the interceptor in the green box (for dogs 11-25 lbs.)-- it's one-fifth the usual dosage because with that dosage it only treats for heartworm and not the other stuff. In Europe I believe it's marketed as Safeheart at that dosage....I had the FDA info for it at one time, but I don't think I have it any more.
