Is it difficult to get the GSD to be less vocal?

I foster-cared for a GSD and found that she liked to make a lot of noise, barking and various other vocalization.

I have Rhodesian Ridgebacks, which tend to be quiet.

I like the GSD more except that I don't like unnecessary noise.

Perhaps a Rottweiler, which is said to be a quiet breed, is better for me. The Ridgebacks are less trainable and harder to find.

to be a vocal breed. Mine hasn't found his full voice yet, so he is relatively quite, but I don't expect that to last....

GSD's are known for different vocalizations but the amt. seems to depend on the individual dog. Our 1st GSD was quite vocal and would sit in front of the window just doing a bark evey few seconds for no apparent reason! If it didn't get to be so damned annoying after about 20 mins. it wouldn't have been a big deal cuz it wasn't loud. The GSD we have now is quite the opposite- quiet inless there is what she percieves as a threat. Shedoes have a great variety of vocalizations when she is playing, but they aren't loud either. So once again- I believe it comes down to the individual dog.

That makes sense. Mine is just trying out different vocalizations during play -- startled me at first!
