Greeting guests....over-happily

panzerismybeagle Nov 11, 2004 09:16 PM

Many of you've seen my posts about my dog Panzer....here's another.

He's about a yr and a half now, and he's a great dog...never had a better one.

About the only problem I have left to break him of, is when anyone, and I mean anyone comes over, he greets them and expects them to want him to jump on him, and love on him, and while that's fine w/most of my friends, there are a few non-dog lovers that come by. I fear that one of my friends who comes over particularly often probably caused this cuz he encourages it and really enjoys Panzer to whimper and jump on him and bey.

This causes a particular problem w/children, who he knocks over in excitement. I can scold him and tell him no, but he sulks so when I do that.

Any suggestions on how I can break him of this?

Hi!

Congreyts on getting most issues solve with Panser.

Jumping on people is a problem, but one that can be solved. First, you have to get this friend of yours to stop encouraging him. That isn't helping at all. You will also need to enlist your dog friendly friends to help you solve the problem.

Do you have the sit perfected? And look at me? If so, here's what you can try.

Have a treat handy and his leash.

Have a friend ring/knock ont he door. Put Pansers leash on him, then place him in the sit/look at me position with the treat in sight.

Open the door, reminding him to sit/look at me while the friend comes in.

Reward with the treat if he obeys. Put him back in the sit if he does not.

As with any new commands, it may take a little while to perfect this.

Hopefully, if I missed anything, or anyone has any other ides, they can chime in. But something like this helped me out tremendously.

Dogs come into our lives, and too quickly go leaving pawprints on our hearts, and we will never be quite the same again.

Thanks so much....I never thought to try that. He's responded really quickly to just about anything I've tried to teach him, so hopefully he'll get the idea pretty fast. I'll post any update I have on this as soon as I get it.

Thanks again for the advice.
