My wifes German Shepard has a howling problem. I like this dog but the howling has me at the end of my rope. Is there any way I can curb the howling?
ANY! WAY!

What is the situation when the howling occurs?

He's laying down in the yard, picks his head up and howls from 30 seconds to five minutes. Nothing has to happen, he just does it.
I don't believe it's an attention getting device. If I walk out of the house to shush him it doesn't stop. He goes until he decides he's done.

Training would teach the dog to change focus from whatever is triggering the howling to what you ask of him. A training class can teach you how to do that. If training doesn't work, it might be a seizure disorder and he's actually "unconscious" during this action.
