Doberman Ear Cropping

buddhamonk Nov 17, 2004 02:07 PM

I had my dobies ears cropped about 3 months ago. The vet said that he had to cut them a little shorter than usual because they were very large. The cut of the ears looks very good. When trying to get them to stand, he said it is normal for the ears to fall down. My dobies ears are falling inward (toward each other). The vet said it is because of the natural fold in her ear. We have been taping them, and it has helped some, but they still fold inward after about a week of having them taken down. Is this normal? Is there some special way that I should be taping them? Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My dobes ears naturally fold in the middle sometimes. It never really bothered me so we didn't keep taping. I don't think it would have helped anyway! All my puppy pictures of him have the ears going towards the middle too. It isn't always like that now but ocassionally it happens.
I took him to petsmart once when he was a pup and a lady there came up and talked about her dobes. She said they eventually get more control of their ears on their own as they age. Now I'm not sure if that is true but I know we stopped taping and they eventually stopped pointing inward all the time as he got older.
http://www.dogster.com/?23112 theres some pics on that page of how his ears have turned out.

I know our vet gave us the option of bringing him in and having them tape them all the time. I think his ears turned out fine though.

Wow. His look really good. Thanks for the information. I kinda thought that they would straighten up with age. I figured the more her head grew the less skin there would be between the ears. I guess I won't tape them any more. Thanks again for responding.

This link will show a picture of my girls. The dobe is Nietzsche (Neetcha) and her sister Maddy.

So cute! Is that the tape on your dogs ear in the pic? That looks a lot different than what my dobe had. It seemed like his whole head was wrapped. Good luck with the ears!

Yes thats tape. All she had was little sticks with cotton balls on the end, then they were taped around the ear. Thanks for the compliment. They are my world.

KEEP TAPING!!!!!! Do not stop taping till they stand without drooping at all. It sounds like your Dobe is developing pockets - this will cause the ear to lean in. What you really need to do is find someone close by that can help show how to post your puppy's ears correctly. Check out the Doberman Pinscher Club of America website. www.dpca.org you will find information about posting there. If you want help, try contacting someone who is a listed as a breeder in your area and see if they can help you. You can get a listing by state on the website.

Posting can take a long time - do not let the ears go unposted - not even overnight - this is so important if you want a nice ear! My bitch's ears did not stand well until she was over 6 months old and had finished teething - she has a long show crop.

Exactly.

45 minutes of being untaped can cause a Weeks worth of repair.

This is the Method that I am using but I will be making my own page about it with diff ways to prepare the tampon posts due to differences in dogs ears.

This is by Carol of Carousel Dobes.

Remember that in theory even if its six months of taping, It is going to show for the next 13 YEARS.

Keep to the exact directions and post if you have any questions.
