Help with puppy for sale

devryguy Nov 19, 2004 06:13 PM

A family has put an ad in the paper here in the DFW area in Texas wanting $350 a puppy. It looks like the whole litter is male, he has 8 of them. They are currently 6 weeks old and from their pictures as well as what the owner said, they are big puppies so they will grow into big adults. Their tails are docked and dew claws removed. They are also CKC registered. They have the mother living with them but the father of the pups is in another city.

What concerns me is that these will grow into large adults. Even males of this breed are not that large. Do you think these dogs may not be pure Doberman? Why would they be large? Could they have had part rottwwiler in them in the past?

Also, I'm concered with the CKC registration. It seems real easy to register according to their site.

Does this sound like a legit seller or should I avoid them?

Thanks,

Mario

I really know nothing about CKC
But as far as size, my male I bought to show. I saw both parents.
AKC registered.
By time he was 13 months he was 29 in at the shoulder and 95 pds. No showing for him, to big. None of the other pups in the litter got so big.
Ask to see the mother, get the phone number for the sire and call and talk to him.
I wouldn't take a pup at 6 weeks no matter how big they are. They need that last 2 weeks with their mom and littermates.
Study the Dobe standard and look at all the pics you can find, go look at the pups and judge for yorself.
Make sure they have been wormed at least once and have had 1 set of shots.

Yeah 95 lbs does seem large, these will probably be that size. I like your idea of calling the sire, will do that. I have heard that 6 weeks is too early, I was also concerned with him wanting to sell them this young. The pups have had their first shots and wormed twice according to him. Thanks for the response.

Many breeders who register with CKC are doing so because they could not pass AKC requirements--and AKC requirements are easy. Don't deal with a breeder who can't even do that.

I'm not sure if he is even a breeder. Thanks for the advice. Can anyone recommend a good book on Dobermans?

aweaussie Nov 19, 2004 08:20 PM

Its been so long since I have had a dobe, I dont know what book to recommend.
The DPCA site would probably have recommendations.
I am glad you are looking into this and not making an impulse buy. I applaud you for that!!
Dobes are such great great dogs. They are love bugs and the best friend you'll ever want.
Just make sure you get a stable well bred one and you cant go wrong.

I emailed the couple selling the dogs about the large size of these dogs and this is what she said. Does this sound right?

HELLO,
WELL TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS.. THE MOTHER AND FATHER ARE GOOD SIZED DOGS AND HOW BIG THE PUPPIES GET WILL DEPEND ON HOW THEY ARE FED AND TAKEN CARE OF. NO I DO NOT THINK THEY WILL GET AS BIG AS A ROTTWEILER. THE PUPPIES ARE BIG BECAUSE THEY ARE WELL TAKEN CARE OF AND WELL FED. GINGER

I persoanally wouldnt buy from this person.
They should have given you more specific information.
They could have told you what lines their dogs are from, what size the parents are etc.
How you feed a dog will not determine a size of a dog. Not in the context that is being discussed.
They sound, to me, just someone who is breeding just to be getting puppies to sell. Who knows if they are even purebreds.
Surely you can find better. Are you wanting a pup from this litter for a reason?
I'd be very leary. You may end up with some major problems.Buy from someone with a little more knowledge and from someone who cares about the breed.
I dont know the people and havent seen the litter, but my opinion from what you have said...wouldnt take one even for free.

this does not sound like a knowledgeable or responsable breeder. She wants you to believe she fed her puppies corectly (like other breeders wouldn't) and never heard of genetics, if she says the dog size only depends on the food (duuuuuh!). As for shots, she should be having some proof from the vet that she did them, shouldn't she?

As for the registration, I wouldn't give much on it, not if you want to show your dog anyway. But even if you don't, if you consider having a dog you can't compete with, I'd rather take a nice dobie rescue than help back-yard breeders get rich. There are so many great dogs who lost their homes and some of them are really young. Our rescue is a dobie and we got him at 10 months of age and never regreted it - the best dog I know!

I think it's great you're doing this research. Best of luck!
