Thinking of getting a second Dobe !

maximus1267 Nov 25, 2004 01:03 PM

Hi Guys accross the water, we have a 11 month old male Dobe, max. We are considering getting a young Dobe bitch or a Boxer Bitch as a buddy but can't decide if we are doing the right thing or how max would react to a new dog in the house. Max is a real friendly boy who loves to play with other dogs and as never realy turned on another dog, but would having another at home make him jealous. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Manchester, UK.

I think a bitch of either breed could be a good match for your boy. First though, make sure he has gone through some good obedience classes with you, and has been neutered before bringing in a bitch.

You might want to wait till he is a little older because at his age they are quite the handful. You have to have a lot of energy, time, and patience to bring in a second pup or dog at this point. You might want to consider an older dog from rescue. At any rate, make sure that they meet on neutral ground and get along before introducing them at home. You will need to keep them seperated completely unless you are 100% there to supervise - especially if you get a young puppy. It is not unknown for a dog to kill a new puppy - so I am not saying this lightly!

If I were you, I would contact some good breeders and get their opinion. I don't know too much about the breeders in the UK, but I do know there are some wonderful Dobermans there (even with those floppy ears - LOL).

Thanks for that, i will speak to some breeders over here before we get another. Anyway whats up with floppy ears they're cute, in the UK cropped ears are seen as cruel but we still dock their tails. Why do you crop their ears anyway, is it to make them look more aggresive.

Cropped ears are the historic look of the Doberman breed, and are incorporated into our breed standard. My first Doberman was from a byber and I never had her ears cropped. I do not have a big problem with uncropped Dobermans, but as a person who shows in the breed ring here in the states, cropped is standard. Truthfully, a good crop is breathtaking, and I prefer it. I won't get into the cropped vs non-cropped argument. I just feel that the choice should remain.
