Today I was checking on my animals. They have really kept me hopping with 2 snake escapees and all of the eggs. When we left for Colorado on the 27 of Sept. I had one hatchling Bairds Rat snake loose and two MHDs due to lay any day. Four days later we returned to 2 new clutches of eggs and we found the hatchling on top of one of the mouse tubs.
Well, late last week I noticed that the new MHD, the ones Scott Corning handpicked for me from a Malaysian group, looked a bit round. She was perched sort of funny on her branch with her legs straight and her body off of the branch. I could see that she was really gravid. Then I found that my male hognose had escaped. I don't know what's with all these little guys but they seem to want to hunt on their own! I was checking my hatchling Bairds when I turned and saw my hognose on the floor next to a tub of baby rats. I grabbed him and got him back in his tank and then looked in on the Malaysian MHDs. The female looked much thinner so I looked under her tank to see if I could spot any eggs. She is in a large hex tank with a glass bottom. I did see what looked like eggs but they were under the water tub. So, I moved the water and started digging. I found 8 eggs. One was against the side of the tank and was a bit shriveled but all candled pink so I am optimistic.
It looks like my girls are making up for last year as I now have 4 clutches from 4 different females and 3 different males.
