Need some insight

Hello,

We acquired a 2 yr. old male neutered mini dachshund yesterday. He has come from a mom and daughter who could not give him a lot of attention and was left for long periods through the day in a very large wire cage. There was a cat who lived there that he would not allow to come off the counter, and a mini schnauzer who he got along well with.
We have a 5 month old Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier that we have had since she was 10 weeks and loves everybody and everything. The previous owner gave us the wire cage to transport him (Myers) home and gave us his toys and such. The poor little guy refuses to come out of this wire cage even though we have him in another room from our puppy. We have opened the cage door and placed his water and food near and have dimmed the lights and play soft music to help calm him but he won't come out. When I try to slowly reach in to pet him and reassure him, he growls and bares his teeth. The owner said he growls a lot when he is playing with his balls, but I must admit I am a little nervous about how to approach him to try and get him accustomed to our/his new environment.
Does anyone have any suggestions...I really want to give him a fair chance.

Sounds like you would be best served to have a behavior specialist come out to the house and help you with him. It's going to be important to get him started off right, without making him more defensive or pushing him into a habit of biting.
