1 year old great dane nipping at kids

chirobuggy Dec 06, 2004 10:41 PM

I have a one year old Dane that the family loves. The problem is that in the last 6 months he has bitten 3 different children. 99% of the time he plays with all sorts of kids letting them jump on him and he runs around all crazy ion the back yard with them. Since he was a pup we have let the kids feed him and also take the food from him on occasion in an attempt to keep him from growling or snapping at them if they take one of his toys. At least that is what worked for my other dogs in the past. Anyway, the first time he bit my one year old when the dog was sleeping I think my son startled him from sleep and he snippen at him and did bite his face on the cheek. It scratched him and bruised the cheek some. We figured that the dog was dreaming and was startled which caused the bite.?? Next time was this last October when the Zeus bite my niece really for no reason. She is about Zeus' hight and she went to pet his face and he growled and bit her cheek near her eye almost drawing blood.(no excuse) then Sat he did the same to my daughter seemingly for no other reason but that he was tired of her being near??? Dont know what to do. I don't want it to happen again and I am afraid that he may really hurt some kid ( my kids or their friends) and then Lawsuitsor something. If that happens then I might get mad enough to Kill him myself. whgat do yo think? Can we train this out of him or are these tendencies of agression too much to change. Could it be that he needs to be in a home without kids??

Help ...Joe

Ask your veterinarian to recommend a behavior specialist to evaluate this dog in person and help you make an educated decision about what to do. It sounds like the dog could have been handled better, and if you do give him up, you're going to want to learn better ways before getting another dog. An expert in person needs to evaluate whether he is dangerous in general, dangerous to kids, or only dangerous when mishandled.
