New adult dachshunds, pottying on floor when left alone

truedog Dec 09, 2004 02:48 PM

We recently got two adult dachsunds, a 5 year old female mini and a 6 year old male standard. They are potty trained, but when we leave them alone for several hours they tend to potty on the floor. We have tried placing potty pads in the room they are in, but that does not seem to help.
Any suggestions for helping them get into the right potty routine?

A good schedule that they can count on is usually part of the key. You might also try using crates--one for each dog--to help them learn to hold it. Be sure not to overdo the time. Some dogs just can't hold it very long, and no dog should be asked to hold it for longer than 8 hours.

They are typically left alone for around 4 hours. The previous owners kept them crated at night and when the dogs were left alone. We have a hard time with putting them in a crate. We just don't like the idea. They spend the night in our daughter's room and do fine overnight. It is only when we leave for work that we have the problem. Someone here at work suggested a playpen.

4 hours isn't very long to keep them in a crate. I wouldn't crate them at night, if they are fine. That is way too much crate time. I would crate them while gone for now, and maybe try again at a future date.

Also, get something like Nature's Miracle to clean the spots where they have pottied. Otherwise, they will smell the urine and keep going to the same spots to do their business. Nature's Miracle will get rid of the odor.

They are real cuties!!! I love doxies.

Good luck!

Dogs come into our lives, and too quickly go leaving pawprints on our hearts, and we will never be quite the same again.

My dog tends to pee on the floor in the same spot when we arent looking. He knows hes supposed to go out and we crate him when we are gone and we are at work and he holds it the whole time. If we let him out of his crate, take him out and them leave him run for two hours he will pee or poop on the floor! i dont get it. Are Doxies hard to potty train? Mine is.
