My Dog Won't Come!

crysse912 Dec 15, 2004 09:22 AM

My beagle pup is about six months old and I have had him since he was 12 weeks. For the most part training is going very well, he is also completely house broken and rarely ever has an accident in the house, he sits, lays down and shakes but will not come. I have tried teaching the command with treats and toys, and sometime when I give him the command to come he will look at me and run the other way, even if I have treats in my hand. This is very frustrating, my family has 20 acres of land in Maine that we visit every few months and he has so much energy, I would love to be able to let him run around when we visit, but that will never be a possibility if he does not learn to come. Any advice would be very helpful.

I don't think you're going to be able to let a Beagle run around loose, since come-when-called is a very difficult concept for a hound to consistently obey. Still, you want to avoid teaching him that "Come" means to run the other way! So practice your recalls using a long line, to make sure that when you call, the option of running away is removed. Do it this way for a minimum of 6 weeks before you test the waters again and try calling him off-leash. And I'd be sure there's a fence for back up.

Also always make sure its fun for your puppy to come to you while hes learning.
NEVER ever punish a dog when he does come to you no matter what.
He'll associate punishment with coming.
If you have a fenced in area you can also go out to play, you run the opposite way, call his name, when he gets to you, praise praise praise, even give a treat.Puppies love to chase you and see where you are going.
I wouldnt chase the puppy because that will make him think its a game and fun to run while you chase him.
Have a toy out, play with it by yourself, when he comes to see what fun thing your doing, praise him.
Lots of fun things to do..
Even in the house, put him on a leash call him, gently pull him to you and praise him for coming.
Good luck
