dog ramp on stairs?

zeus661 Jan 01, 2005 09:56 PM

Our dachshund likes to go to different levels of our house. I would prefer to keep him off the stairs but that is next to impossible. Has anyone made a ramp to run up along one side of the stairs? If so, how has it worked? I have wondered how it would work goin up and down about 12 steps. Thanks in advance.

I can't imagine how it would work to have a dachshund going down a ramp of that length. We just put in a ramp for our little guy with disc disease; it goes up only three steps, a total of about two feet, and there are times when he seems fearful of going down too fast (this is a formerly fearless dog ...). If the ramp went up 12 stairs, it would have to be quite steep, and I would expect that a dog that was running down it could fall and get hurt. It would be about the slope of a typical playground slide.
Also, you will have to train your dog to use the ramp and not the stairs. This could take some time, and maybe baby gates at the top and bottom, leaving only the ramp open.
Maybe there are people who have put up a ramp of that length. Has anyone done that?

I've never heard of a ramp of this length for dogs. I have for cats. I have a ramp to use for my greyhounds to get into our camper and they aren't too crazy about it. I think it is just too steep and that is what I'd be afraid of for stairs. I never thought about stairs and dachshunds. I've been considering getting a mini after my greys are gone and I have a 2 story.

I'm not sure how a dachie would work with this. I think I would also suggest baby gates at the top and bottom and carry them up. Are they mini's or standards?
