Purchasing Dobe puppy, would like advice

rianandamber Jan 03, 2005 07:24 PM

My husband and I have decided to purchase a dobe puppy after a year of researching the breed. We have looked at many breeders and believe we have found the right one for us. We are going to meet the breeders, and see the mom and dad to be this Saturday, the 8th. Any important things we need to look for? Please help. Also, we have a minature pinscher. He'll be four years old in April, and is the center of our world! (we don't have children yet.) Are there certain things I need to do to make the new dog more acceptable for Silas?

Thanks Amber and Rian

thanks for the info. It helped. Now, what about introducing the doberman to my minpin? Silas is very aggressive toward bigger dogs. I know this is bad. We didn't purchase him from a great breeder. I've heard some of you call them "greeders." Anyhow, we bought him before we knew really "how to buy a good dog." He's defiantly my heart, but I know he's really to aggressive. I don't want him and my new dobe to have problems. Silas has been neutered. Will the dobe be aggressive back? I figure given time they'll learn to love each other. I just need some advice.

thanks amber

I don't know about when he is a pup, but my dobe ignores anything smaller than my corgi. My cousin has a yorkie that jumps all over him and nips at him and he usually acts like its not even there.
With my corgi and husky, who are extrememly jealoues of eachother, we just keep them on opposite sides of the couch or room or wherever we are at. I hope it works out well for you. Post some pics when you get them!

If you get a Dobe to live with him, he could wind up killed. A male Dobe would be a bad idea, and a female probably wouldn't work, either. The only way it might work would be a male Dobe if Silas were female. But he's not. So I wouldn't recommend getting a large dog while you still have him.
