How much food? and what brand?

zeus661 Jan 05, 2005 12:05 PM

How much food per day, how many times, and what brand do you feed your Dachshund? We have a 4 yr old male, about 15-16 lbs. We give him Prescription Diet K/D, the vet recommends it. We know he could lose a pound or two. We measure out about 1 cup in the morning and pour a little in his dish about three times a day. Thanks

Our mini/tweenie, at 11 lbs, gets 1/4 cup Science Diet/Adult/Small bites plus one teaspoon Iams canned food, in the a.m. and evening. Adding water makes him think he's getting more. Watch the treats: every little bite adds calories. Snips of carrots and other vegetables are better for these dogs than baked treats. You can substitute homemade soup or cooked vegetables for the Iams (when we have leftovers, he gets a change of pace), but packaged food has too much salt. We also give our guy chlorophyll tablets (1/4 of one) as rewards ... it's how he learned to do his business outdoors!

Hi,

This seems to be a bit much for him, but I don't know the dog. Why does your vet have him on K/D? This is a diet for kidney problems. Has your dog experience problems with the kidneys?

Dogs come into our lives, and too quickly go leaving pawprints on our hearts, and we will never be quite the same again.

He had a problem in the past and the vet recommended K/D.
