Re: Yorkie with Digestive Problems

Anyone have any suggestions for my little 4 pounder? She frequently has bouts of loose stools or vomiting. Not large amounts of vomiting or often, just once and a while. I've been to the vet, for the vomiting he starts her on soft bland food and gives her some sort of antibiotic charcoal mix. It helps, for the loose stools I give this pectin antibiotic mix. It also helps, any other suggestions?

Hi:

My show dog Maggie, suffered from very loose bowl movements when she was younger, it was a form of colitis. The vet tried different things but nothing seemed to help her. We decided to look into something natural. First of all we took her off of any meat products, as meat has fat and causes contractions in the bowl and causes very loose stools. We experimented and tried canned pumpkin mixed with her dog kibble. After a few days we added some raw vegetables, that were put in the food processor, things like carrots, sweet potatoes, all this with the pumpkin helps to bulk up the bowls. In Maggies case it really helped, she went on to become a Canadian Champion. Do it gradually and be patient, it does work. As far as the vommiting if it is very little it probably is nothing my yorkies do it. If the vommiting is excessive check her gums, make sure they are a pink color. If they are not you can try a little tea and sugar, make sure its cool enought so she can lap it. If she refuses to drink and the gums are grayish, take her to a vet, as she needs to be rehydrated. I hope this information is of some help to you. John, windriftca@yahoo.ca

Those sound like great suggestions. My little girl is just over a year, I'm hoping she will outgrow some of this too. But I'm going to keep it in mind. I have have her on boiled chicken, white rice, and plain yougart, she does well on that too. She is always active, even when sick, but I'll keep an eye on her gums, too. Thanks for all the info!!! Pam

AND, on the other hand it could be something more serious. I would check into every possible physical cause for this.

I would also check with my vet before adding or taking anything out of the diet. This can make the problem worse.

Ask your vet about adding some acidolphius (Sp?) tablets to the diet. But ASK YOUR VET first.
