Barking Beagle

copper1 Jan 22, 2005 09:50 PM

I realize beagle's are notorious for their bark, but our beagle seems to bark a little excessively at times i wouldn't think he'd bark. he almost seems upset when he barks and he'll stand in front of me and just look at me and bark, this even happens at times when i play with him. to try and discipline him i verbally try to stop the barking and then put him in his crate if this doesnt help. the crate doesnt help much and normally he comes out ready to bark. any ideas or suggestions?

Beagles were deliberately bred to be loud. Punishment isn't going to help. Here's a link to an article about barking that you may find helpful:

Thanks for the link. Your article gave me some good ideas. I think part of our beagles reason for barking fits into the section regarding boredom. We live in the midwest and have had some nasty winter weather which has prevent us from going on walks as we did when he first came into our house. We try to keep him entertained and give him exercise acivities inside but it can be a challenge.

Beagles love to eat. One way you might increase his physical and mental activity is to take part or even all of his daily food and hide it for him to search out and find it. Or you could put it into toys that he works to get it out of. Hiding it might be more satisfying to a scenthound like the Beagle. Or do some of both.
