How do I stop the digging?

sportymonk Jan 23, 2005 02:05 PM

I though I got two beagles, that's what the breeder siad they were. The vet thinks they are beagles also but I know idfferent. They are GOPHERS! My two 7 month olds live in a fenced in backyard with plenty of room.

They are dug holes everywhere and have almost dug out a couple of places. I have started filling in the bigger ones on the weekends but they redig as fast as I fill in. I have the microchipped in case they dig out but I don't want them out.

They were just fixed so I though that would make the quit roaming but they are still digging!

Can you train a pair of beagles to stop digging. My back yard looks like a scene from Steve McQueen's "The Great Excape".

Gopherhounds! What fun. I've only had 1 dog want to do any digging and I was able to stop her by placing her poop in the hole she was digging. You may want to fix up a spot in your yard and teach them to dig there. However, this means not letting them outside unsupervised until you get this spot firmly fixed in their training. I'm a worry wart when it comes to my dogs. I rarely let them out without being there with them, but that's me.

Good luck!

Dogs come into our lives, and too quickly go leaving pawprints on our hearts, and we will never be quite the same again.

Giving the dogs their own area to dig works well for a lot of people. As Melody says, you do have to supervise, at least until the habit of digging only in that place is all set. It also helps to regularly bait that area by burying stuff there for them to find.

Beagles dig, the breeder should have let you know allt heir traits. I don't know how you would go about training it out since it is bred into them. A spot where they can dig may be the answer but I know my dogs would think it means they can do it everywhere.

Are they always outside? They may be bored. They need a lot of interaction and get bored very easilly. You could always dig down and continue the fence three/two feet. They may learn its pointless once they can't get out. Try some other types of toys for them or something else to do. My beagle used to love playing in a kitty pool(my husky does it now and she doesn't dig as much-but now its too cold!). A kong might work if you put food in it. I hope you find something that helps!
