Pure bred question

bernadette Jan 25, 2005 03:40 PM

I have a pure bred labrador retriever, he is only a couple weeks over a year old. He is very slow to catch on to things. I had a mut before him and he was the smartest dog I've ever known. Are pure breds kind of stupid and slow? Just wondering. Thanks.

There isn't any overall difference between intelligence in mixes and purebreds. But between two individual dogs, whether both are mixes, both are purebreds, or one of each, there can be differences. Sometimes what we think of as lack of intelligence in a dog is actually quite high intelligence. The smartest dogs are the hardest to live with.

My Yellow Lab is the sharpest dog I have. In that he wants to listen - I had hell with a Dalmation and a Dachsund/Lab mix that has the attention span of a mollusk.

I notice the more you teach a dog the more it learns to learn.
