question about picking up..

claudia96 Jan 26, 2005 12:49 PM

We moved and my Doberman doesn't have as large of a yard as we used to have, to run around in. I want to start taking her for regular walks. But every time I've taken her since we moved here, she goes to the bathroom in someone else's yard. I bought a 'portable' scooper, it's small has bags in it. However this is really, really, not convenient, as she isn't the best walker. I have to wrangle her and carry the scooper, it smells, it's a mess. And the large black scooper with a long handle that I use for the yard is too big to carry around.

The other day I saw my neighbor walking a Doberman and it occured to me that other Doberman owners (and owners of large dogs in general) must have the same problem. Could anyone please tell me, what do you guys do? I've tried having her go before we leave, but she'll just do it again in someone's yard. Is there any easier way to do this?

Just use plastic bags and pick it up with the bag over your hand, turn it inside out and tie it closed. You can buy scented bags even at several pet supply websites, or I buy black bags at stores like PetsMart. I've never carried one of those big scoopers - what a pain in the patootie! I just always have bags in my pockets - sometimes they even go through the wash if I forget to take out an unused one before washing my jeans.

I agree about the plastic bag method, it's the easiest. Also, keep offering your dog a chance to potty at home both before and after every walk. There's a good chance eventually she will start using those times and quit going on walks, especially when she sees you consistently picking it up.

I bought one of those poop bag carriers I found at PetSmart, but the refills cost too much. So, I just get the sandwich baggies with the twist ties and I stuff a few in there when I walk. I have greyhounds, and Jadzia has to poop every time we walk. So, I know what you are going through. These little baggies work just fine.

Dogs come into our lives, and too quickly go leaving pawprints on our hearts, and we will never be quite the same again.

Thank you guys for the advice, I appreciate it. I'll look for the scented bags. Also I'll try to wait until she goes each time before I take her. Hopefully with time she'll become a better walker. Maybe if I take a small paper bag to put the plastic bags in, that would reduce the scent too. I'm not sure. Thanks for the tips!

hi

try a face halti to walk her it gives much more contrl- like a horses head collar, also a lead made of 'bungy' type cord so when she pulls or bounces forward it takes some of the shock out of it, finally taking treats and reguarly call her name and say heel then treating her every time she is not pulling will help train her. you will need to call her every few seconds for the first walk or two (depending on how food motivated she is!) but will slowly get better.

now the pooping. Try a trick name(eg. 'potty') each time you see her doing her business - whereever you are, home or walking-then treat her. It may seem wrong to praise her while walking but first she must learn that cue 'potty' is to do her stuff. once you think she has made the conection call the 'potty' word before walking and give her a chance to go. This may take a while to teach esp. if she is in the yard all day and you miss lots of potty times.

hope you have more success soon.

You can buy those scented potty bags at walmart. That is where my mom buys them from.

I have a four year old Doberman and we walk two miles twice each day. She usually goes once. I have found if I am observant I can catch her in time to hold the bag under her and catch it before it hits the ground. Since Dobe's are so tall, this is very easy to do.
I use the bags from the grocery store and they open plenty wide, then I tie the handles together and take it home with me.
I find this much easier than picking it up.
Very seldom do I not catch her in time, but if I don't then I resort to turning the bag inside out and picking it up.
