Kong Toy

lyzni Jan 31, 2005 08:52 PM

I just got one of those little puppy Kong toys, the blue and white one where you put the treats and peanut butter inside. My chi doesn't seem to take to much interest in it. He just licks the stuff on the outside and walk away. Does anyone else have one for their chi? Maybe he's too small to play with it. How is it even supposed to work? I had heard it was a good way to keep dogs occupied, but he won't give it the time of day.

My Chi did the SAME thing, he licked in the hole of the toy until he couldn't get it any more, then walked away.

Especially if they are puppies, I think they are way too little to play with it correctly.

My sister has Jack Russells and they will spend HOURS chewing that toy attempting to get the stuff out.........

Maybe your chi isn't very toy oriented? I don't know much about having a chihuahua but maybe it would help if you made the food a little more difficult to get out? My dog loves when I soak his kibble in hot water and stuff the kong with it and really pack it in.. It took him a little while but he figured out that if he chews on the outside end the kibble falls out.. If I really want to keep him busy I'll freeze it before I give it to him..

Someone else should be able to tell you better whether or not a chi is strong enough for these things though.. I had shih tzus and the neighbours had a chi, a pekingese, a papillon, and a toy poodle when I was growing up and not a single one of them would play with toys, nor were they very interested in food that wasn't peanut butter or cream cheese so we never did get them to play with a kong, but my mom's shih tzu now is very toy oriented.. Your little guy may just never be a toy loving kind of dog..

sorry been away for a while. was sick and had to get the pups back up on their feet after their surgeries.

my suggestion is find a really yummy treat your pup likes and put it in there and ONLY give him this treat when it is in the kong. my male pup likes kongs but only for a while (about 30 minutes to an hour) my golden will chew on it for hours if i let her.

you can add lots of differnet things in it. but dont fill it full its a waste as they dont usually get all of it (only if your dog is really into it do they try to get all of it) try different things till you find one that he/she likes

I agree with the suggestions, many times you can get a dog interested if you hit the right food inside. Start with just enough to peak the interest and then have it disappear. Not taking it from them like they are bad but just before they lose interest. Keep it so that it's always "fresh" and so that it doesn't become like that old bone that might earn a snif every now and then but doesn't really mean much. If you keep if "fresh" then they seem to always want it and want it until the last morsel is gone.

In the case of my families Chi's none of them like the kong.

But my hounds are a different story, they all find the kong a great treat. Well, what's in it anyhow.
