Is Nemex safe for BC's?

DnD Feb 01, 2005 02:30 PM

Hi I would like to intorduce myself. I have not posted on this particular forum before. I have five dogs and a horse. I own two Great Danes, two Dachshunds and a Border Collie. My BC is three years old. His name is Kip and I rescued him from a local rescue ranch. I LOVE BC's, everything about them. Kip has been a challenge and I have loved every minute of it. I look forward to getting to know you all and your BC's.
Now for my question. Is Nemex safe for Border Collies? I know that they can't have ivermectin. We use interceptor for heartworm prevention. He needs to be wormed for intestinal worms and I was wondering if Nemex is safe. Thanks!!!!

I have talked to too many people who have killed their dogs with home worming. It's so much safer to do this with your veterinarian.

Not all Collies are sensitive to Ivermectin but it takes a test of ther DNA to find out for sure. I just did this with a young BCX we got. I have not done it for my BC and that is because the vet showed me (on paper) the amt. of Ivermectin that is dangerous to those that are sensitive to it and the amt. that is in the usual treatments for parasites and heartworm preventative. The dangerous amt. are thousands times larger than what can be dangerous to Collies of any kind. I am not saying that one shouldn't be careful! I plan to switch my dogs' heartworm preventative this yr. just in case. I would NEVER kowingly give my dogs anthng that even MIGHT cause harm! As for worming - unless you see evidence of parasites I wouldn't bother. I have never wormed my dogs- they have never shown any symptoms of parasites and they have had stool samples checked. There really is no good reason to worm your dogs just in case they have them. Do it only when stool samples are checked by a vet cuz they will give treatment specific to whatever parasite they may have which can also make a difference in what they are treated with. There just is no good reason to worm them jst for the sake of doing it even though I know it is common practice with horses.
