I would avoid pig ears. As tasty as they are for dogs, they present hazards, especially for younger puppies. I have had one 16 week old puppy choke on a piece that lodged in her throat, and I know of many other people that have had the same experience with both adults and puppies.

Go for a safer alternative.. a large raw bone from the butcher or a large smoked bone from Petsmart (which can be rich and cause loose stool), a Kong filled with goodies or other type of safe alternative that is good for chewing.

For just regular snacks, a good quality edible bone such as the ones made by Mother Hubbard are an excellent choice. You can also make your own treats by taking hotdogs, slicing them about as thin as a quarter, and then microwaving the "chips" until they are crispy.
