HELP can overfeeding=compaction?

devon Oct 09, 2003 12:22 PM

One of my D. Azureus is displaying signs of compaction. This began after I started providing large numbers of D. Hydei after a brief period of smaller portions of D. Melanogaster due to culture crashes. I'm very concerned about this frog, does anyone know if there's anything I can do for him?

He shares a 50-gallon false-bottom with another Azure and 2 Leucs. They've been in this set up together for 2 years now with no discernable health problems in any of the animals.

We sell a product at the pet store I work at called Laxatone. IT is used to help cats with hairballs, but many people safely use it to cure small animals with constipation. I would imagine it to be safe for a frog and thats the only thing I can think of to help the poor little guy. Get a vets opinion before you actually try this. Good luck,

Thanks for the idea Audio. I'll run that past my vet, but she rarely has anything concrete to say about dart care. I guess the exotics portion of vet school skips over the common household poison dart frogs.

Try putting a little mineral oil on a termite or pinhead or try to get a drop of mineral in his mouth. If he is compacted, this should help him relieve himself. Why do you think he's compacted ?

His abdomen is very bloated and he is in obvious discomfort (sitting stragely, looks like he is trying to barf). I lost a green tree frog to the same condition and this looks similar.

How do you get them to open their mouths to give the mineral oil?

Send an e-mail to Dr.Frye@comcast.net. He is great and works with frogs. I am currently treating one of my Azureus for a skin issue, and DR. Frye was a great help.
