nick6562 Feb 03, 2005 10:56 PM

i have a 6 month old jack that will do his business outside if i let him out, the only problem is he dosen't do anything to let me know. is there anyway to train him to do so. another problem is that i work for 8-11 hours a day so i can't always watch him. he is a good dog i just need to know what to do.

I prefer putting dogs on a schedule of being taken out, rather than expecting the dog to realize he needs to go, get the person's attention, persuade the person to stop what they are doing and take him out, and then continue to hold it until he's in the right place. I think this is too much to put off on the dog. Until the dog is reliably housetrained, I recommend taking him out once per hour during the times you are at home and awake. By the time he's housetrained and not having any more accidents, you will know from having gone out with him during the training just how often he does need to go out.
