Puppy training frustrations........

ashwee1080 Feb 04, 2005 12:20 PM

Ok - so Buddy is 4 months old now.........as I said before I started putting him in a crate during the night instead of in our bed b/c he was peeing in my bed. Anyhow - now he is pooping in the crate in the middle of the night and it is stinking up my room.

The only thing I have left to do is put him in his exercise pen w/ the paper while we're sleeping. But a part of me feels bad b/c he's in there all day while I'm at work.

I'm just frustrated because I'm doing EVERYTHING that I have read and been told to do with potty training the Chis. Last night I took him out 4 times in two hours, then 15 mins after we came inside he pooped in his crate. I just don't get it, is he acting normal???

I know it takes a while to potty train them, but when will he start to stop peeing on paper, and know to go outsid only?? Or when should I expect him to do this?

I know he's still a baby, and I totally understand, I am just annoyed because I KNOW I'm not being a bad mommy.......but I feel like I'm not doing something right???

HELP!

Potty training is a lifelong thing I think, ha ha. Zara is getting better (5 months old) but she's no wear near done being trained. If I had a back yard, I think this would be SO much easier. *sigh* I like Zara being in the bed with me at night (i don't have the peeing problem though) because she wakes me up when she needs to go out. I had to work last night so I got home and 3AM and took her out. She actualy let me sleep until nearly noon today. I woke up with her little head resting on my neck!!

You might note what time your pup poops in his crate each night. If it's around the same time, just wake up a bit early to take him out.

the first thing that comes to mind is maybe you are feeding your pup too late? water too.

i pull my pups water at 8 now..used to be earlier before they could hold it. they are both fed at 5pm (and 7am) which gives them plenty of time to go out before bed time.

schedule is the key

Hi, I went through what you did for a long time. I know EXACTLY how you feel. My dog well one of them is almost 2 now. She got better whens he was around 1. I think being chihuahuas they are just so tiny they go to the bathroom frequently. When my chihuahua who is 3 lbs got to be an adult she could hold it ALOT better and does not like going in her cage. When she was a puppy even at 6 months she always went 1 or 2 in the front of the cage. It takes patience. I have a seperate doggy room so it makes life much easier but in your case I'd say keep up with the habit of making sure he goes to the restroom BEFORE going to bed. I have a 3 month old puppy now and she goes in her cage all the time. It gets pretty bad where she stinks everytime I get up in the morning and have to constantly give her a bath in which dried out her coat. I keep her out at night with a puppy pad and NO GO spray. She does well with it and she goes on the pad. Any way my point is, you're not doing anything wrong, it's just the breed of chihuahua happens to be harder at potty training. all small breeds have MORE OF a problem then bigger breeds. I am not saying all chihuahuas are bad at housebreaking but being so tiny and they sometimes have stubborn personalities it is tougher while they're growing up. Think of their WHOLE puppy training as a human baby. It does take time, hang in there.
