Rawhide

lyzni Feb 04, 2005 08:56 PM

Are rawhide bones okay for puppies? His bone is about 6in. long and skinny. Theres no way he could swallow it, he's only about 1.5 lbs. But I've heard so many horror stories about doggies dying from rawhides. He seems to love it, so I don't know what to do!

I and a lot of other people think rawhide is very dangerous, i will never give it to my girls. Why not give your chi a raw carrot instead?

Other than choking on them, what is dangerous? He can't swallow the bone, it's too big. Do chi's like carrots? I've heard that, but I wasn't sure.

They can bite bits off and when in the stomach can cause blockages a friend of my husband lost their yorkie that way.Yes my chis love raw carrots.

He's only a 3 mos. Is he too young for carrots? Do they like the little carrot bits? Or like a long carrot stick?

I give my chis a slice of carrot each, but i dont know about at your chis age you would have to be careful and watch them with most things they eat or chew on as they can choke on anything.

hey,

just another viewpoint on the whole rawhide discussion.

I too refuse to give my pups rawhide. I have never had anything bad happen but like you i have heard the stories.

I give mine pig's ears and pigs hooves. but even when they have those i watch them carefully.

my pups love carrots!! they have from day one always with supervision but they love them. when they were younger i would give them whole carrots frozen. now they are a tad older (9 and almost 12 months) they get the slices frozen

just my .02

I was told by my vet not to give any of my dogs pigs ears cause they are pure fat. She said it was worse then us eating Big macs cause at least big macs have lettuce on them.

I'm thinking of taking the raw hide away from my chi. My father in law has a cocker spaniel and she was sort of choking on raw hide yesterday. so it made me sort of scared to let my chi have it even though he loves it.

i agree with your vet the pigs ear does have a lot of fat in them. But i dont give them one each day. maybe one a month for my chi's (it takes them about a month to eat the whole thing) and for my 2 larger dogs they get one every other week as a treat.

i would rather give them those then some of the 'treat's' out there with perservitives and additives and junk in them.
