Newly adopted beagle - a couple of questions

hookem04 Feb 07, 2005 03:17 AM

I adopted a one year old beagle a few days ago and she has been great other than a couple of things - she is quickly learning where to go outside and not to jump on everyone. The biggest problem is her crate. As long as I am in the room with her she is ok, but the second I leave she starts whining, even if my roomates are in the room with her. At night she does not like it all. Tonight I moved the crate into my room and she was ok for about 30 minutes and then she started whining and trying to claw out. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

i let mine sleep with me and it has worked out real well. i wanted to avoid putting her in a crate at night or bathroom only to have her cry all night. dogs will not defecate where they sleep. i leash her to me so if she has to go she'll wake me up for sure. she hasn't ever cried or had an accident. i've had my girl over a month now too. she cries a little bit after being put in the crate but quiets down after a little bit. this is regardless of anyone being present or not at all.

i've grown up with german shepherds and am new to beagles. i've learned that they're very social creatures and require a bit more contact than your average dog. i don't know if what i'm doing will actually help, but i figured keeping her with me as much as possible would help. it seems to have as she hasn't reacted in all the negative ways i've been hearing about.
